To mark Hong Kong’s 4th Large Scale Media Art Exhibition, “Fleeting Light”, the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong will be holding a free afternoon Symposium: “Art Casting Light and Shadow in the City”. The symposium aims to explore the ramifications of ‘light’ when used in participatory artworks, or when used for works for urban contexts. Themes include artists’ responses to Hong Kong and the phenomenon of the ‘lit-up’ city, the responsibilities of the artist when playing with light, notions of site-specificity, ways to understand and interpret the possible obtrusiveness of light in artworks, the nature of public involvement in large-scale works, and the ways that light can be used to highlight an absence of light, or to create dark.

For this symposium, artists Jim Campbell, Leung Mee-Ping and Samson Young will discuss new works that they have conceived for the “Fleeting Light” programme. The symposium will include talks from media artists and project curators Jeffrey Shaw and Maurice Benayoun, as well as lectures on form and public space from artist Marysia Lewandowska, and architect and urbanist, Colin Fournier. The symposium will be held in the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, where a free retrospective exhibition of Jim Campbell’s work will be on display.
