Time Flips, People Changes.
What is installation art? By definition, Installation art describes an artistic genre of three –dimensional works that are often site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. Installation art always place on land, so it calls “Land Art” too. The artwork above called “Grow”, which is designed by Japanese artistic–Kumi Yamashita.
This artwork is simply made by the three-dimensional numbers figure, camera and lighter. Kumi Yamashita uses the reflection of the figures to create the illusion of woman’s body. What do you think about the number? The artist wants to show the main concept of “Time”.
“Time Flips, People Changes”, which is the gist of the artwork. We can see that, in the side of the woman’s body has more numbers figure. Apart of the concept I mentioned above, the artist also want to show the persistence of woman, the persistence of love. When the woman grows, she faces more challenges, change relationships and organize her own family. The artist wants to use the numbers to show the woman grows, they think more. The numbers can show this fact.
Besides, about Kumi Yamashita, she wants to make an educational message to public and children through natural. She said that she can create many different images through shadow. Also, shadow painting is more eyes catching than the normal painting. She chooses shadow painting to teach children, instead of using painting.
As for me, at the first glimpse of this photo, what comes to me is that a woman can be more meticulous planning and careful accounting no matter what, even by hook or by crook when time leaves marks on her. Also, I studied in girl’s school, so I can really know that girl’s brains are more meticulous. Besides, in this work, I also see a woman who stands in front of the window, just like waiting for something.
Personally, I quite appreciate Kumi Yamashita’s work. She only uses some simple things like paper, lighter and glue. Then she can make a great artwork. However, I think one thing she had ignored, which is the effectiveness. Actually, installation art often place in public, everybody just pass up the artwork quickly. Maybe they cannot understand the underneath meaning of the work through the quickly pass by. I think she can simply illustrate the meaning of the artwork. Otherwise, public cannot understand this work, how wasted is it.
