What would you ask for, if you could have just one wish come true?
”I wish” is a phrase that we usually use in our daily life like “I wish it wasn’t rain today.” , “I wish I can get on train on time.” But what if we think deeply about what we really want, you would not wish for the better weather but the things that come more meaningful to you.
And those wishes may appear on collection “I Wish Your Wish” of the exhibition “ A Day Like Any Other ” by Rivane Neuenschwander. “I Wish Your Wish” is an installation, which invited thousands of people to write down their wishes and print them on the colourful ribbons.
In fact, writing down the wish on a ribbon is a tradition that takes place at Brazil where people there will knot the written ribbon three times around the left wrist and until the ribbon finally falls off. And that means the wish will come true.
There are lots of colourful ribbons full of the white wall. Visitors can take a ribbon to home and write their wishes in return. The new wishes will be printed and fill back in the future exhibition. By exchanging the wishes, the exhibition changes every day. It is just like a life painting that it will change constantly but unexpectedly. This is a global exhibition, thus the wishes that people made is a kind like the reflection of the city.
Moreover, the exhibition is a human exchange. The time that you choose the wish and tie it on your wrist, you are wishing someone’s wish too. “I wish I had the coverage to divorce my husband”, this is the wish that I read on a site talking about the exhibition. In fact, visitors are not only reading others wishes, but also their story behind. This is not only an artwork, but also an experience that looking at strangers’ lives by seeing their wishes.
Though I did not go to see the exhibition but there is an online version of “I Wish Your Wish” on http://www.miamiartmuseum.org/wish2.asp.
This is a fun and interactive installation that carry out thousand of wishes. I do not know whether the wish will come true or not, but the artwork gives people hope.
