Chinese describe our hairs as “煩惱絲”, which means “bundles of trouble” in English. And “絲” is pronounced as “詩”, which means “poem”. This poem is about troubles of life and expressed with hairs, thus it is named as “煩惱詩”.

It is inevitable that we encounter many troubles during our life. If the amount of trouble is measurable with hair as the parameter, we can use the different dimensions of hairs to express our happiness and sadness.
Generally, we gain happiness easier in our childhood. As we are growing up, we encounter more and more difficulties and these may depress us. However, we will learn lessons from our experience and become wittier. When we become old, we can treat the problems with generous and open attitude.
As time goes on, our hair will change. It seems that the length, thickness, amount, color, texture and even structure (straightness and curliness) of our hair change with our mental state.
To write a poem with hair, we can express many things about life.

The color, the thickness and the rich texture can draw audiences’ attention.
I think the power of the artwork is initiated by the name, “煩惱詩”, and the sequence of the hair position. When the audiences notice the name of the art piece, they will think about troubles they encountered. When the audience recognizes the ages the hairs belong to, they will associate trouble to life.

I have this idea created in my mind when I was backing home by MTR after doing projects in CMC overnight. I was very depressed not only due to the pressure from school, but also family affair. Leaving the school, I had to go back home. Both places were full of bitterness, but used to give me sweetness.
My head was heavy and hanged on an exhausted body. I could hardly raise my head and kept looking at the ground in the train. From this point of view, I saw my dirty hairs, my “煩惱絲”. A poem, “煩惱詩”, was therefore composed in that morning.

Instruction of the artwork:
1. Collect natural hairs of different ages without treated with chemicals within one year. e.g. 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80… years old
2. Display them on a wall with nails, from right to left, from young to old.
3. The amounts and lengths of hairs of different ages are different according to the sadness at the ages. The color and texture are also different.
4. Looking at the hairs just like reading a poem.
5. Reading it slowly from young to old, hair length changes from short to long and then short, from thin to thick and then thin again, reader can see the rhythm of life.
6. Start reading it at the readers own ages, and then looking back to the younger ages, they will have their past memory popping up in their mind. Then look forward to the older ages, they will think about their future.
7. Reading the poem carefully by comparing the structure, texture and color changes, and readers may think about the affairs they encountered and how they affect their lives.
8. Readers may have emotional changes when reading it.
9. What do the readers get from the poem is different for each individual.

“I have nothing to say / and I am saying it / and that is poetry / as I needed it”
- John Cage

Less is more. Hope this quiet and small piece of artwork can be powerful enough to move and touch the heart of the audiences.
